After-the-Flood Respite Outreach
Helping Hands has hosted “respite dinners” for Rochelle Park families affected by flood disaster, in 1999 with Tropical Storm Floyd, in 2011 with Hurricane Irene and in 2012 with Hurricane Sandy. In 1999 we provided dinners five evenings a week, Monday through Friday, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for eight weeks. In 2011 we provided the same respite for a six week period. In 2013 we provided hot lunches from noon to 3:00 p.m. for a one-week period. In 2011 following Hurricane Irene, Sacred Heart Church/Helping Hands Ministry was invited by the Office of Emergency Management in Rochelle Park to become official members of their team. We actively participated in that role during Hurricane Sandy. Helping Hands provided meals for the team's first responders. Helping Hands also provided 95 trays of food for the emergency shelters in both Moonachie and Little Ferry – two areas devastated by Hurricane Sandy.
